Why you might need one
An FFL is a federally licensed dealer. In a private sale they are the party who can run the background check — required in some states for every transfer, optional in others but still the thing that puts a check and a record behind the sale. Which applies to you depends entirely on your state, so each state page below says what that state requires rather than making you guess.
Doing the transfer itself
